The 10.85 km² former municipal area in the Vôge bordered in the east on the Côney (tributary of the upper Saône ). The Ruisseau des Cailloux flows through Harsault, which flows into the Canal des Vosges in the east of the district and has a gradient of 100 meters on its four-kilometer course through the former municipal area. The canal runs immediately west parallel to the Côney. There are four locks on the four kilometer long section of the canal through Harsault. In the northwest, a strip of the municipality reached up the Cailloux valley to the municipal boundary of Vioménils. South-west of Hautmougey, the relief rises over a stepped terrain onto the plateau of the Grand Bois. The highest point in the municipality was reached here at 443 meters above sea level.

The area around Harsault is used partly as arable land, partly as pastureland, while forests dominate in the southwest ( Bois de Montroche ), in the east ( les Chavanes ) and on the up to 60 meter high river slopes , which cover a quarter of the municipal area.

The districts of La Forge de Thunimont and Thunimont belonged to the municipality of Harsault .

history

The name Harsault can be proven for the first time in the 14th century. Until the French Revolution, the area of today's municipality belonged to the bailiwick of Vesoul in Franche-Comté , in 1790 it moved to the newly formed canton of Bains-les-Bains in the then Darney district . In 1776 the Saint-Gengoult church was built.

Metallurgy had a long tradition in the community. In the district of La Forge de Thunimont (la Forge = the forge), the factory buildings of the usine Thunimont still stand today . The equipment of the metal factory, which was founded in 1725, included two metal cutting furnaces , a hammer forge and a wire drawing shop . In 1785 the metal works had 16 employees, in 1802 it had 40 employees. The decline in ore finds in the area led to the closure of the plant in 1860. A cotton spinning mill and a weaving mill then moved into the factory halls, and apartment buildings were built around the factory. The textile factory was given a small port when the Canal des Vosges was built . After the decline of the textile industry in the 1970s, the factory was rebuilt so that several shops were accommodated in it (including baby outfitters, real estate agencies). Today the entire former factory site has been closed.
