Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse in the Lure arrondissement .

geography

Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse is located at an altitude of 244 m above sea level, 11 km northwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 31 km north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north of the department, in the western part of the plain of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse, on the Semouse , on the edge of the heights of the Vôge .

The area of ​​the 16.54 km² municipal area includes a section of the plain of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse. From northeast to southwest, the area is crossed by the alluvial lowlands of the Semouse, which provides drainage to the lantern . The low lying on average 245 m and has a width of up to three kilometers. In the area of ​​Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse, the Semouse takes on the Augronne from the left and the Ruisseau du Chânet from the north . Because of the high groundwater level, the former sand and gravel pits are filled with water.

On the northern side, the valley level is flanked by hills, which are partly wooded, partly with arable and meadow land. To the north are the heights of the Bois du Plein Chanoi , to the west of the Mont Amarin (up to 300 m) and the Bois de Laboncourt (293 m). After the south, the community area on the plane, and the depression of the running parallel to Semouse extends Combeauté to the adjacent forest heights of the Bois du Griselier . At 315 m, the highest point of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse is reached here.

From a geological and tectonic point of view, the heights north of the Semouse consist mainly of shell limestone from the Middle Triassic . The elevations south of the alluvial plain are made up of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments, which were deposited during the Lias (Lower Jurassic).

The settlements of Le Chanois (246 m) on the southern edge of the lowland and Augrogne (242 m) in the Semouse valley belong to Saint-Loup-sur- Semouse. Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse are Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont , Fleurey-lès-Saint-Loup and Magnoncourt in the north, Corbenay and Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil in the east, Hautevelle , Francalmont and Ainvelle in the south and La Pisseure , Anjeux and Bouligney to the west.

history

The municipality of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse was inhabited as early as late antiquity. The Grannum settlement was located here . In 451 the place was invaded and destroyed by the Huns. St. Lupus , Bishop of Troyes, opposed Attila , king of the Huns . In his honor, the village was henceforth called Saint-Loup.

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Loup developed into a castle town. The Saint-Nicolas Hospital was founded here in 1276 and existed until 1785. For a long time Saint-Loup was disputed between the Dukes of Burgundy and Bar. In 1475 and 1477 it was temporarily taken by troops under Charles the Bold . At first Saint-Loup did not come to France together with Franche-Comté with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The French King Louis XIV then annexed the place in 1679, which was only approved with the Treaty of Besançon (1704).

As early as the 18th century, thanks to the abundant water power, Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse developed into an industrial and commercial location with mills, iron and forge works, wood processing, tanneries and textile industry. There was a further boom in 1860 with the founding of a chair factory under François Lebrun. This laid the foundation stone for the furniture industry, which gave the place the name Cité du Meuble ( Furniture City). With the opening of the railway line from Faverney to Aillevillers, Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse was connected to the French railway network in the second half of the 19th century.

  • The church of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse was consecrated on December 13, 1789. The remarkable furnishings include a marble altar from the 16th century, a painted statue of the Madonna from the 14th century, as well as paintings and other statues from the 17th and 18th centuries.

With 3221 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse is one of the largest communes in the Haute-Saône department. After the number of inhabitants had initially decreased in the first half of the 20th century (3709 people were counted in 1901), the population grew continuously from 1954 to 1982. During this time the population had almost doubled. At the beginning of the 80s, the highest level was reached with a little more than 4900 inhabitants. Because of the crises in the industries located in Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse, a significant decline in population has since been registered. The decline since 1982 has been around 25%.

Economy and Infrastructure

Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse developed early on into an industrial and commercial location. Larger industrial and commercial zones are located on the eastern outskirts. The most important branch of industry is still furniture manufacture, with the range of production ranging from handicrafts to contemporary furniture. Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse is the headquarters of Groupe Parisot (around 800 jobs). Other branches of industry include the packaging industry, the construction of agricultural machines, the construction industry, the textile industry and precision engineering. As a regional center, Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse also has numerous retail establishments, a supermarket and companies providing services for everyday needs. It is the location of a college.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the old main road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Bourbonne-les-Bains . The town center is relieved of through traffic by a bypass road. There are other road connections with Bains-les-Bains , Corbenay and Conflans-sur-Lanterne .
