Roye and Vosges

Roye is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Roye is located at an altitude of 302 m above sea level, four kilometers southeast of Lure and about 29 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village is located in the eastern part of the department, on the Lure plain, between the Ognon and Rahin rivers .

The area of the 10.37 km² large municipal area includes a section of the plain of Lure. The alluvial plain on the edge of the Vosges is an average of 300 m. It is traversed by the rivers of the Ognon and the Rahin, which flow with numerous windings through a formerly marshy area to the southwest. The plain is partly used for agriculture, partly with forest. Former sand and gravel pits are filled with water because of the high groundwater level.

The north-western boundary runs along the Ognon. To the north, the municipality extends into the extensive forest of the Grand Bois and to the edge of the slopes of the former Lure-Malbouhans airfield. The eastern boundary is partially marked by the course of the Ruisseau des Prés Besançon . To the east of this body of water, the municipal area extends into the La Noye Jeannin forest . At 333 m, the highest point of Roye is reached here. This hill consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

The La Verrerie settlement (302 m) in the Lure plain belongs to Roye . Neighboring municipalities of Roye are Froideterre and La Neuvelle-lès-Lure in the north, La Côte and Palante in the east, Frotey-lès-Lure in the south and Lure in the west.

history

Roye was first mentioned in 1134 under the name Roa . The names Roha (1187) and Rhoa (1275) have been handed down from a later period ; The current spelling has existed since 1431. The place name originally comes from the Celtic language and means something like man-made watercourse . In the Middle Ages Roye belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . It formed the center of a rule that belonged to the noble Roye family until the beginning of the 15th century. Then the rule came to the Grammont and their vassals. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Roye is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Lure, which comprises 22 villages .

Economy and Infrastructure

Mairie Roye

For a long time, Roye was mainly characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and fish farming. The hydropower of the rivers was previously used to operate mills. There was a glassworks in La Verrerie from 1792 to 1830. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the welding technology, metal processing, construction and gravel and sand mining sectors. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N19, which leads from Lure to Belfort , and on the D438 (Lure - Héricourt ), which has four lanes here. Other road connections exist with Malbouhans and Frotey-lès-Lure. The railway line runs through the area from Belfort via Lure to Vesoul. The nearest train station is in Lure.
