Éhuns is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Éhuns is located at an altitude of 264 m above sea level, seven kilometers southwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on the western edge of the Luxeuil plain and the Lanterne valley , at the northern foot of the heights of the Bois de la Grande Brosse .

The area of ​​the municipal area of ​​5.53 km² comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape south of the lantern. The northeastern part of the area is occupied by the alluvial lowlands of the Lanterne. It is on average 255 m and has a width of around five kilometers. Agricultural use prevails here. The north-eastern demarcation runs in parts along the Lanterne, while in the east there is the lowland of its side stream Ruisseau de la Mouroie .

To the south-west, the community area extends up the gently sloping slope of Éhuns, the subsoil of which is mainly made up of shell limestone from the Middle Triassic . Further to the southwest, an approximately 100 m high step leads over to the wooded heights of the Bois de la Grande Brosse . In addition to shell limestone, sandy-marl and chalky sediments that were deposited during the Lower Jurassic also emerge here. At 407 m, the highest elevation of Éhuns is reached here. With a narrow tip, the community soil extends beyond this ridge into the headwaters of the Durgeon .

Neighboring municipalities of Éhuns are Breuches in the north, Baudoncourt in the east, Visoncourt in the south and Villers-lès-Luxeuil in the west.

history

The area around Éhuns was already settled in prehistoric times. Numerous remains from the Gallo-Roman period, in particular wall foundations (Camp de César) and graves, have been discovered. Éhuns is first mentioned in a document in 1299. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . The monastery of Luxeuil held local rule . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Éhuns is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Saulx, which comprises 17 villages . The village does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Villers-lès-Luxeuil.

Attractions

The sights of Éhuns include the remains of ski jumping facilities from the 15th and 16th centuries and the roofed fountain in the village square from the 19th century.

With 234 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Éhuns is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (227 people were counted in 1886), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Éhuns was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Baudoncourt to Villers-lès-Luxeuil. There are other road connections with Sainte-Marie-en-Chaux and Visoncourt.
