Mairie Hautevelle

Hautevelle is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Hautevelle is located at an altitude of 262 m above sea level, eight kilometers west-northwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 26 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on a slightly elevated position on the northern edge of the Lanterne valley plain .

The area of the 7.78 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the lantern. The central part of the area is occupied by a wide hollow that extends in a west-east direction. It is traversed by the Rôge , which is dammed east of the village to the 24-hectare Étang du Beuchot . The alluvial low lies at an average of 240 m and has a width of around two kilometers. It is mainly used for agriculture.

To the north, the terrain rises gently to the wooded heights of the Grandes Revenues (316 m), which form the watershed to the Semouse valley. They consist of alternating layers of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). Shell limestone from the Middle Triassic also appears in some places . To the south of the hollow, an approximately 60 m high step leads to the wooded height of the Bois la Dame . It is made of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic . At 334 m, the highest elevation of the Hautevelle is reached here.

The hamlet of Le Beuchot (247 m) on the western bank of the Étang du Beuchot belongs to Hautevelle. Neighboring municipalities of Hautevelle are Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse in the north, Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil and Luxeuil-les-Bains in the east, Breuches and Ormoiche in the south and Francalmont in the west.

history

Remains from Gallo-Roman times indicate a very early settlement of the area. Hautevelle was first mentioned in a document as Alta Villa in 1256. The names Auteville (1362), Autevelle (1442) and Altevelle (1481) have come down to us from a later period . The place name is derived from the Latin words alta (high) and villa (country estate). In the Middle Ages, Hautevelle belonged to the Barrois as an enclave in the Free County of Burgundy. It was assigned to the territory of Saint-Loup, which was under the lords of Faucogney. Hautevelle was the location of a small Benedictine priory mentioned in 1407. There has been a blast furnace in the hamlet of Le Beuchot since the 17th century .

Attractions

Saint Didier Church

The Saint-Didier church was rebuilt in 1874 in a neo-Gothic style. It houses two altars (18th century), statues from the 17th century and a silver reliquary (18th century). The former hermitage of La Logeotte has been converted into a farm.

With 267 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Hautevelle is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (624 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Hautevelle was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In Le Beuchot there is a wire factory that emerged from a forge. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse to Breuches. Further road connections exist with Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil and Francalmont.
