geography

Raddon-et-Chapendu is located at an altitude of 346 m above sea level, 7 km east-northeast of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 35 km northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in the western foothills of the Vosges , in the valley of the Breuchin , at the entrance to the valley of the Raddon.

The area of the 12.50 km² municipal area comprises a section of the plateau landscape on the western edge of the Vosges, which is criss-crossed by valleys. The southern border runs in the alluvial valley of the Breuchin, but only in a few places extends down to the course of the river. The floodplain lies at an average of 330 m and is around one kilometer wide. The valley of the side stream of the same name flows from the north near Raddon. To the east of the Raddon Valley, the municipal soil extends up the slope of the Grand Ban (up to 480 m).

From the lowland of the Breuchin, the community area extends northward over a densely wooded steep slope to the adjacent plateau of Chapendu, which is mostly covered with forest ( Forêt de Raddon ). In between there are some clearing islands. At 497 m, the highest point of Raddon-et-Chapendu is reached in the very northeast. The northern boundary marks the valley of the Rôge , a tributary of the Lanterne . The entire municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

From a geological and tectonic point of view, the heights consist predominantly of crystalline bedrock. Remains of sediments from the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ) can be found on the plateaus . The valleys are filled with Tertiary and Pleistocene deposits .

The double community consists of the districts Raddon (346 m) in the valley of the Breuchin, Chapendu (435 m) in a clearing on the plateau north of the Breuchin valley, Les Forges (425 m) in the valley of the Rôge and some farms. Neighboring communities of Raddon-et-Chapendu are Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert with Fougerolles and Saint-Bresson in the north, Amage in the east, Breuchotte in the south and Froideconche in the west.

history

Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

Raddon was first mentioned in 1258 under the name Randon . In the Middle Ages Raddon and Chapendu belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney. In 1424 the residents were granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Raddon and Chapendu have formed a double community since the time of the French Revolution. In the course of the 19th century Raddon developed into a location for trade and industry (mills, an oil mill and paper mill, quarries, textile industry). Today Raddon-et-Chapendu is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Mille Étangs, which comprises 16 villages .
