Brevilliers is located at an altitude of 365 m above sea level, three kilometers east of Héricourt and about 8 km southwest of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends to the west of the Burgundian Gate , on the edge of the basin of the Ruisseau de Brevilliers at the northern foot of Mont Dannin. The area of the 6.47 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the Burgundian Gate. The northern part of the area is taken up by the broad basin of Brevilliers, which lies at an average of 350 m and is drained by the Ruisseau de Brevilliers to the southwest to the Lizaine . To the south and south-east, an approximately 50 to 80 m high step leads over to a high plateau made up of limestone from the upper Jurassic period . It lies at an average of 410 m and is partly used for agriculture, but also shows large forest areas. These include the Bois du Mont Dannin , on which the highest elevation of Brevilliers is reached at 442 m, the Bois de Chevrey and the Haut-Bois .

Neighboring municipalities of Brevilliers are Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois in the north, Banvillars , Dorans and Bermont in the east, Châtenois-les-Forges and Bethoncourt in the south and Héricourt in the west.

history

The municipal area of Brevilliers was already settled in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the Dolmen des Issières . From the first half of the 12th century Brevilliers was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard, who handed the village over to the rule of Héricourt. In 1748 the village, which until then belonged to the Principality of Montbéliard , finally came under contract to the French crown. Since 2001 Brevilliers has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Héricourt, which comprises 20 localities .

Attractions

The Lutheran Church of Brevilliers was built in 1788 after the previous building was destroyed. The parish belongs to the Lutheran parish association Le Mont Vaudois with eleven others . In the village there is a lavoir (well and wash house) from the 19th century. A boundary stone (18th century) shows the border between France and the Principality of Montbéliard.

With 620 inhabitants (2007), Brevilliers is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century was mostly in the range between 310 and 380 people, a significant increase in population was recorded, especially during the 1960s. After a temporary stagnation, there has been a further increase since 2000.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Brevilliers was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in Héricourt and the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the four-lane main road D438, which has been developed here in sections and runs from Belfort via Héricourt to Lure . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 7 km away. Another road connection is with Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois.
