geography

Dorans is 362 m above sea level, about six kilometers south of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the area of the Burgundian Gate , in a wide hollow west of the valley of the Savoureuse , on the eastern edge of the hills of the Grand Bois.

The area of the 3.77 km² large municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The waterway of the Canal de la Haute-Saône , a branch of the Rhine-Rhône Canal, is also located in the valley floor .

From the valley level, which is an average of 340 m, the community area extends westward into the long hollow of Dorans. This is surrounded by several hills, which are partly covered with forest, partly with arable land and meadow. The area around the Fort of La Verpillière is part of a military area.

Neighboring communities of Dorans are Argiésans and Botans in the north, Sevenans in the east, Bermont in the south and Brevilliers and Banvillars in the west.

history

Dorans is first mentioned in 1189 under the name Daurans . Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Dorans came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Dorans belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin , but remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France. Fort La Verpillière, which is part of the fortification ring of Belfort, was built from the mid-1870s. Since 1998, Dorans was initially part of the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Attractions

Dorans has a small chapel but is attached to the parish of Bermont. The old town center is characterized by various farmhouses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 18th and 19th centuries.

With 751 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Dorans is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Dorans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on a departmental road that leads from Bermont to Banvillars. The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about two kilometers away. There are other road connections with Botans and Sevenans.
