Riervescemont (German earlier upper Wessenberg ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Riervescemont is 600 m above sea level, five kilometers northeast of Giromagny and about 15 kilometers north of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends into the southern Vosges , on the upper reaches of the Rosemontoise , at the southern foot of the Tremontkopf. Riervescemont is the northernmost municipality in the Territoire de Belfort department.

The area of the 8.52 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the southern Vosges. The heavily reliefed and predominantly wooded area is located in the headwaters of the Rosemontoise. Several brooks in deeply cut valleys unite to form the Rosemontoise, which leaves the area through the narrow valley at Château de Rosemont (southwestern border). Incidentally, the municipal boundary runs on the surrounding mountain ranges: in the southeast the Tête du Mineur (928 m), in the north the Tremontkopf (at which the highest point of Riervescemont is reached at 1,091 m) and in the west the Mont Rouchon (976 m). These mountain ranges form the southern foothills of the Ballon d'Alsace . The municipality is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

Neighboring communities of Riervescemont are Sewen and Dolleren in the north, Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges in the east, Vescemont in the south and Lepuix in the west.

history

In what is now the municipality of Riervescemont, the Counts of Montbéliard founded Rosemont Castle (German: Rosenfels ) in the 11th century . It was the center of the Rosemont rule, an important rule that over time encompassed the entire north of the Territoire de Belfort. In the middle of the 14th century it came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , the area came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. The name Riervescemont was first mentioned in 1698. Since 1793 the settlement belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Today Riervescemont is united with 13 other communities to form the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Sous Vosgien .

Attractions

The ruins of the medieval Rosemont Castle rise on a ledge above the Rosemontoise valley.

With 100 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Riervescemont is one of the smallest municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (174 people were still counted in 1891), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s, before a noticeable increase has occurred more recently.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Riervescemont was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is far away from the major road connections. The only access is from Giromagny.
