Danjoutin (German earlier Damjustin ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Belfort .

geography

Danjoutin is 349 m above sea level, about three kilometers south of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the area of the Burgundian Gate , in the wide valley plain of the Savoureuse and in the hollow between the heights of Bosmont in the south and Fort des Basses Perches in the north.

The area of the 5.65 km² municipal area includes a section of the slightly undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The central part of the area is crossed in a north-south direction by the valley of the Savoureuse, which provides drainage to the Allan . The flat valley floor is approximately one kilometer wide and averages 350 m. It is flanked in the west by the hill of the Grand Bois (380 m), with the municipality floor reaching into the valley plain of the Douce (right tributary of the Savoureuse).

To the east of the Savoureuse, the municipal area extends into the wide Danjoutin basin, which is bordered in the east by a flat saddle that leads to the Vézelois plateau. In the south this hollow is bordered by the forest heights of the Bosmont (402 m) and the Bois de la Brosse (414 m), in the north by the hill of the Fort des Basses-Perches , on which the highest point of Danjoutin is reached at 427 m.

Neighboring municipalities to Danjoutin are Belfort and Pérouse in the north, Vézelois in the east, Andelnans in the south and Bavilliers in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Danjoutin was already settled in Gallo-Roman times and that a villa existed here. Danjoutin is mentioned for the first time in 1170. The place name goes back to the Latin names Dominus Justinus (Saint Justinus) or domus Justini (House of Justinus). At that time Danjoutin was the main place of a dairy farm belonging to the Belfort Provostry. Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Danjoutin came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century.

During the Thirty Years War , Danjoutin was ravaged by Swedish troops in 1636. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Danjoutin belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin , but remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France. Danjoutin was connected to the French railway network in 1858 when the line from Belfort to Mulhouse was opened.

On January 7th and 8th, 1871, violent fighting raged between the French and Prussian troops near Danjoutin, with the village again being partially destroyed. Subsequently, in 1875, the construction of the Fort des Basses-Perches began, which formed part of the fortification ring around Belfort. As early as the second half of the 19th century, the Savoureuse industry established itself in the valley floor. For a long time the textile industry and a cable factory played an important role. Danjoutin was also badly affected by bombing in 1944 during World War II . In 1967 the area around Danjoutin was separated from the canton of Belfort and the village was raised to the capital of the canton of the same name. Since 1973 Danjoutin has been part of the Belfort agglomeration, from which the Agglomération Belfortaine community association was formed in 1999 , which in turn merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 . Until 2015 Danjoutin was the eponymous capital of the canton of Danjoutin, which was dissolved that year .

With 3715 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Danjoutin is one of the medium-sized municipalities of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century was mostly in the range between 2300 and 3000 people, there was significant population growth from 1950 to 1970. The highest level to date was reached in the mid-1970s with around 3700 inhabitants. The economic crisis and industrial restructuring in the Belfort and Montbéliard area from 1975 to 1990 resulted in many workers and families moving away. As a result, a population decline of 16% was recorded by 1990. Since then there has been another increase in population. Today the settlement area of Danjoutin has grown together almost seamlessly with those of Belfort, Bavilliers and Andelnans.
