Saint-Dizier-l'Évêque (German formerly Sankt Störingen ) is a French commune in the canton of Delle , Territoire de Belfort department, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . The name is derived from the holy bishop Desiderius Rhodonensis , who was buried in the village church.

Saint-Dizier-l'Évêque is located in the southernmost part of the Territoire de Belfort on a plateau that geologically belongs to the Jura . The municipality lies at an altitude of between 374 and 615 m and has 428 inhabitants (January 1, 2017). history

Traces indicate a settlement as early as the Neolithic. As early as the 7th century, while Bishop Desiderius was still alive, there was a chapel or oratory near today's church. In the Middle Ages and until the 19th century, the village was a regionally important place of pilgrimage . Until 1937 the community was called Saint-Dizier, then with the addition of Saint-Dizier-l'Évêque.

Attractions

The village church was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style and consecrated in 1041. The bell tower was rebuilt in Gothic style in 1575 and raised in 1875. In a side room of the church is the tombstone of St. Desiderius, in the crypt the sarcophagus , both from the 7th century. In Val Saint-Dizier there are still remains of the former pilgrim baths.
