Auxelles-Bas (German earlier Lower Assel ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Auxelles-Bas is located at 489 m above sea level, about twelve kilometers north-northwest of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends at the southern foot of the Vosges below the Planche des Belles Filles , on the edge of the Giromagny basin, which extends between the Vosges, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert, on the course of the Rhôme. It is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 9.41 km² large municipality includes a section in the area of the Vosges foothills. The central part of the area is crossed in a north-west-south-east direction by the Rhôme valley, which provides drainage to the Savoureuse . Initially relatively narrow, the valley floor below the village widens to an almost one kilometer wide valley floor. There are several ponds here that were once created for fish farming. The valley of the Rhôme is flanked by the gently undulating landscape on the north-western edge of the Giromagny basin. In the east the hill of Fort de Giromagny rises , while in the west the forest height of the Bois de Lachapelle forms the separation from the adjacent valley of the Rahin . The area consists partly of arable and meadow land, partly of forest. To the north, the municipal area extends to the foot of the Vosges below the heights of Mont Ménard and Mont Ordon-Verrier . At 621 m, the highest point in Auxelles-Bas is reached here.

Neighboring municipalities of Auxelles-Bas are Auxelles-Haut in the north, Giromagny and Chaux in the east, Lachapelle-sous-Chaux in the south and Plancher-Bas in the west.

history

Auxelles is first mentioned in 1135 under the name Acella . The names Ascella (1156), Axella and Aucella (1221) followed. Probably in the 10th or 11th century, a first castle was built on the hill east of the village, which belonged to the Lords of Faucogney . Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Assel Castle passed to the Counts of Ferrette in 1520. A distinction has been made between the two communities Auxelles-Bas and Auxelles-Haut since 1569 . The castle was sacked during the Thirty Years War , fell into ruin and was later used as a quarry for building new houses in the village. Together with the Sundgau , Auxelles-Bas came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Auxelles-Bas has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department since 1793, but remained in France in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace .

For a long time Auxelles-Bas was focused on mining and processing of ores (copper, silver). In the course of the 19th century, the textile industry established itself. The factory was abandoned after the crisis in the textile industry in the 1930s. Today Auxelles-Bas is a member of the eight municipalities community association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse .

Attractions

The St. Catherine Church ( Église Sainte-Catherine ) in neo -Gothic style was consecrated in 1876; the tower dates from 1880. There are only a few remains of the former Assel Castle.

The Fort de Giromagny is located on the eastern border of the municipality as part of the Système Séré de Rivières (also Barrière de fer / Iron Barrier), the fortress belt around the city of Belfort .

With 463 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Auxelles-Bas is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 764 people), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Auxelles-Bas was a village dominated by trades (mills, weaving mills) from an early age. Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses, including an aluminum foundry and a large sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Giromagny along the Vosges foot to Ronchamp . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 kilometers away. There are other road connections with Lachapelle-sous-Chaux and Auxelles-Haut.
