Vauthiermont (German formerly Walter Berg ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vauthiermont is located at 392 m, about 14 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges , on a hill between the valleys of Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas in the west and Traubach in the east.

The area of the 4.74 km² municipal area includes a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average at 380 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. To the west of the village is the headwaters of the Loutre . Further to the west, the communal soil extends into the valley level of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas , which ensures the drainage of the area to the south via the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . To the east the terrain rises slightly to the mostly wooded plateau of the Haut-Bois , on which the highest elevation of Vauthiermont is reached at 412 m. This plateau forms the watershed between the catchment areas of the Rhone (in the west) and Rhine (in the east).

Neighboring municipalities of Vauthiermont are Angeot in the north, Bellemagny and Saint-Cosme in the east, Reppe and Fontaine in the south and Larivière in the west.

history

Vauthiermont was first mentioned in writing in 796 under the name Walthenberg in a document from the Murbach monastery . In the 14th century Vauthiermont belonged to the lordship of Rougemont-le-Château , but in 1363 the rights to the village came to a noble von Angeot family. In the middle of the 14th century, Vauthiermont came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. The village was badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War . Together with the Sundgau , Vauthiermont came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. As a border town, Vauthiermont held the function of a customs post between France and the German Empire from 1871 to 1918. Since 1997, Vauthiermont was initially merged with 12 other municipalities to form the Communauté de communes du Tilleul , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Attractions

The Saint-Antoine church was consecrated in December 1770 and enlarged in 1845. It has impressive stained glass. Opposite the church is the Mairie-École (parish and school house) built in 1842 and made of red Vosges sandstone in the typical architecture of the 19th century. The old town center is characterized by half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries in the characteristic Sundgau style.

With 210 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Vauthiermont is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (313 people were still counted in 1891), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vauthiermont was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Mulhouse .

The village is off the main road connections on a departmental road that leads from Fontaine to Bellemagny. The next connection to the Autoroute A 36 , which crosses the municipality, is about five kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Angeot, Reppe and Bréchaumont.
