Mairie

Chèvremont (German earlier Geisenberg ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chèvremont lies at an altitude of 355 meters above sea level, about five kilometers east of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street-lined village stretches across the plains of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau between Belfort and the vast forests of Grands Bois and Bois de Bessoncourt, on both sides of the Trovaivre stream.

The area of the 8.83 square kilometer municipal area comprises a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The central part of the area is taken up by the vast expanse of Chèvremont. This is drained to the east by the two streams Trovaivre and Neuf Fontaines , which unite to form the Clavelière . The plateau lies at an average of 355 meters and is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The highest point in Chèvremont is reached at 391 meters above sea level on the hill near the fort. To the south, the municipality extends into the forest area of the Grands Bois . With a narrow strip, the communal soil extends eastward over the wide floodplain of the Autruche into the extensive forest of the Bois de Bessoncourt and the course of the Madeleine . This ensures the drainage of the area to the south to the Bourbeuse and thus to the Allaine .

Neighboring municipalities of Chèvremont are Bessoncourt in the north, Petit-Croix and Fontenelle in the east, Vézelois in the south and Pérouse in the west.

history

Chèvremont is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century. Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Together with the Sundgau , Chèvremont came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. From 1889 the Fort of Chèvremont was built, which formed part of the fortification ring around Belfort. There was a change of territory in 1973 when Chèvremont merged with Fontenelle to form the dual municipality of Chèvremont-Fontenelle. However, the two localities separated again in 1977 and have since formed independent communities. Since 1998, Chèvremont was initially part of the communauté d'agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

With 1,600 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chèvremont is one of the smaller municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 500 and 700 people, there has been strong population growth since the early 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

The train station around 1900

Until well into the 20th century, Chèvremont was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various small and medium-sized businesses, including a textile and a sauerkraut factory. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares, but has good transport connections. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Belfort to Montreux-Château . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around three kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Bessoncourt and Vézelois. Chèvremont has a train station on the Paris – Mulhouse line , where the TER Alsace and TER Franche-Comté trains stop .
