Vellescot (German earlier Hanendorf or Hahndorf ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vellescot is located at 364 m, about 14 kilometers southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street row village extends in the flatlands of the Burgundian Gate , on the gently sloping slope north of the Écrevisse brook.

The area of the municipal area of 3.55 km² includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The central part of the area is crossed in an east-west direction by the valley basin of the Écrevisse, which provides drainage over the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . This basin is flanked on both sides by a plateau, which averages 380 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. In the valley of the Écrevisse and in the hollows of the plateau there are various ponds that were created for fish farming. To the north, the municipality extends over the plateau into the forests of Bois du Flandrier and Bois de Ragie de la Dame . At 387 m, the highest point in Vellescot is reached on the hill south of the Écrevisse valley.

Neighboring municipalities of Vellescot are Bretagne and Chavannes-les-Grands in the north, Florimont in the east, Boron in the south and Grosne in the west.

history

Vellescot is first mentioned in writing in 1105 under the name Vellecort in a document from the Froidefontaine Priory. Since the 12th century Vellescot belonged to the County of Ferrette . In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , Vellescot came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. The village was connected to the French rail network in 1913 by a railway line from Belfort to Réchésy . However, operations were discontinued in 1948. Vellescot has been a parish after Grosne since the Middle Ages.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vellescot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major road connections on a department road that leads from Delle to Dannemarie . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Grosne, Brebotte and Suarce.
