Lepuix-Neuf (German earlier Sood ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Lepuix-Neuf is 413 m above sea level, eight kilometers east-northeast of Delle and about 21 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street row village extends on a plateau in the plains of the Burgundian Gate in the catchment area of the Suarcine .

The area of the 5.46 km² large municipal area includes a section of the slightly undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average at 400 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. At 418 m, the highest point in Lepuix-Neuf is reached on a hill southeast of the village. In hollows and valleys there are numerous ponds that were created for fish farming. The area is drained by the Dorfbach northwards to the Suarcine. In the east, the community area extends into the valley basin of the upper Suarcine, which at the same time forms the border with the Oberwald to the east . In the south and west, too, the border in Banbois and Grand Bois runs along large areas of forest.

Neighboring communities of Lepuix-Neuf are Suarce and Hindlingen in the north, Friesen and Ueberstrass in the east, Réchésy in the south and Courtelevant in the southwest.

history

Lepuix-Neuf was first mentioned in 1189 under the name of Albapoys . In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. It was part of the Florimont reign . Together with the Sundgau , Lepuix came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France.

The village was connected to the French rail network in 1913 by a railway line from Belfort to Réchésy. However, operations were discontinued in 1948. In November 1944, heavy fighting between the Allies and German troops took place in the area of Lepuix-Neuf, Réchésy and Suarce, during which the church and numerous houses were destroyed. In order to avoid confusion with the municipality of the same name Lepuix near Giromagny, Lepuix was officially renamed Lepuix-Neuf in 1961.

With 298 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Lepuix-Neuf is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (350 people were still counted in 1891), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lepuix-Neuf was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and fish farming. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is located away from the major road connections on a department road that leads from Suarce to Réchésy. There are other road connections with Courtelevant and Friesen.
