Mairie Bethonvilliers

Bethonvilliers (German earlier Bethweiler ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bethonvilliers is 375 m above sea level, about nine kilometers northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends to the north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges , on the course of the Madeleine .

The area of the 1.90 km² municipal area covers a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average at 380 m and is very slightly inclined towards the south. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. On a hill northeast of the village, the highest point of Bethonvilliers is reached at 407 m. The western boundary is the Madeleine, which flows through a more than 500 m wide, flat valley basin. It ensures drainage to the south via the Bourbeuse to the Allaine .

The neighboring municipalities of Bethonvilliers are Saint-Germain-le-Châtelet in the north, Lagrange and Larivière in the east, Lacollonge in the south and Menoncourt in the west.

history

Bethonvilliers was first mentioned in a document in 1295. Initially under the influence of the Lords of Montbéliard, the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the middle of the 14th century. The Madeleine formed the border between two dominions, so that the village was divided: Bethonvilliers-rive-droite belonged to the Belfort provost, while Bethonvilliers-rive-gauche was subordinate to the Rougemont dominion. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Bethonvilliers has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department since 1793, but in 1871 it remained part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. In the first half of the 20th century, the village was connected to the French railway network by a railway line that led from Belfort to Étueffont . Since 1997, Bethonvilliers has been part of the communauté de communes du Tilleul , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 . Bethonvilliers is ecclesiastically dependent on Saint-Germain-le-Châtelet.

With a population of 248 (January 1, 2017), Bethonvilliers is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had clearly decreased in the first half of the 20th century (191 people were still counted in 1891), strong population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bethonvilliers was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The water power of the Madeleine was previously used to operate mills. In earlier times, a blast furnace (1684 to 1833), in which the iron ore from the area was smelted, and a cotton mill (from the middle of the 19th century) were important. Today there are various local small businesses as well as a construction company. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Mulhouse .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road N83, which leads from Belfort to Mulhouse. The next connection to the Autoroute A 36 , which crosses the municipality, is about three kilometers away. There are other road links with Saint-Germain-le-Châtelet, Lagrange and Menoncourt.
