Lachapelle-sous-Chaux (German earlier Kappeltscha ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Lachapelle-sous-Chaux is 415 m above sea level, about eight kilometers north-northwest of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the foothills of the Vosges , in the Giromagny basin , which extends between the Vosges, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert, on the plain east of the course of the Rhôme.

The area of the 11.16 km² large municipality covers a section in the area of the Vosges foothills. The main part of the area is taken up by the plain of the Giromagny basin, which lies at an average of 420 m. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The area is drained by the Rhôme and its side streams south to the Savoureuse . Along the streams and in hollows there are numerous ponds that were once created for fish farming. Among the most important are the Étangs de la Claire and the Étang de la Veronne and the Étang de Malsaucy on the southern border. To the west, the municipality extends into the extensive wooded area of the Bois de Lachapelle , in whose hilly area the highest point of Lachapelle-sous-Chaux is reached at 605 m.

Lachapelle-sous-Chaux includes the hamlet of Le Malpatey (420 m) on a slightly elevated position on the southern edge of the Bois de Lachapelle. Neighboring municipalities of Lachapelle-sous-Chaux are Auxelles-Bas in the north, Chaux in the east, Sermamagny and Évette-Salbert in the south and Errevet and Plancher-Bas in the west.

history

Lachapelle was first mentioned in a document in 1347. Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , Lachapelle always belonged to the lordship of Rosemont. In the middle of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , Lachapelle-sous-Chaux came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. In 1883, Lachapelle-sous-Chaux was linked to the French rail network by a railway line from Bas-Évette (on the main Belfort-Vesoul line) to Giromagny . Since 1938, however, the line has only been used to transport goods. Today Lachapelle-sous-Chaux is a member of the eight municipalities community association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse .

With 741 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Lachapelle-sous-Chaux is one of the small communes of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (594 people were still counted in 1891), there has been significant population growth again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lachapelle-sous-Chaux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses, including construction. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Sermamagny to Auxelles-Bas. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Chaux. Lachapelle-sous-Chaux is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line.
