Reclam's concert guide

Reclam's concert guide with the subtitle orchestral music is - despite its size - a handy music guide . It was first published in 1959 by the Philipp Reclam jun. published in Stuttgart . The 13th edition with 1,072 pages was published in 1985. The following statements refer to this 13th edition.

Structure / content

On 1,072 pages, the concert guide contains a foreword, the dictionary and an appendix.

In the foreword section (pp. 5–8) the concert guide's editors, Hans Renner and Klaus Schweizer , have their say.

The lexicon section (pp. 9–887) contains life pictures ( biographies ) and descriptions of the composers' works . The composers are arranged chronologically according to the year of their birth. This part begins with Georg Friedrich Händel (1685–1759) and ends with Wolfgang Rihm (* 1952). Every outstanding composer is presented with his or her orchestral works ( symphonies , instrumental concerts , serenades ...); there are around 600 works in total. Numerous - altogether more than 450 - note examples explain the verbal statements.

The appendix contains an overview of the history of music (pp. 889–1014); therein: Musikepochen (pp. 889–933), “Germany and Austria in the 20th Century” (pp. 933–948) and “Other Countries” (pp. 948–1014), a section “The Orchestra” (p. 1015 -1018), an index (pp. 1019-1052) with explanations of technical terms and the most important things about musical instruments and musical forms . It closes with a list of the composers (these in alphabetical order) and their works (pp. 1053-1071).
