Ada (orchids)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.

Ada aurantiaca , illustration

The genus Ada from the family of the orchid (Orchidaceae) comprised 16 plant species , which are located in Central America and South America, in north-west of Costa Rica to Bolivia. The small, perennial plants usually grow epiphytically .

The genus name is currently a synonym for the genus Brassia , into which Ada was integrated.

distribution

The species of the former genus Ada occur north to Costa Rica, to the east they are still to be found in Venezuela and Guyana, to the south their range extends along the Andes via Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia. There they grow as epiphytes in very humid cloud forests at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.

Systematics

Within the subfamily Epidendroideae , the genus Ada was classified in the tribe Maxillarieae and there in the subtribe Oncidiinae . For a long time the genus consisted of the only species Ada aurantiaca , until in 1972 Williams classified a group of species around Brassia glumacea in this genus. In 2012 the genus was revised on the basis of DNA analyzes and fully integrated into the Brassia genus .
