Grandvillars (German Granweiler ) is a French commune with 2974 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Territoire de Belfort department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region .

geography

The municipality of Grandvillers is located on the Allaine , about twelve kilometers southeast of Belfort near the Swiss border .

history

Even before the Roman settlement, there was a place called Villario, which was called Grandi-Villari from the 7th century. Grandi-Villari was on the important route between Mandeure and Augst . Excavations from the late 19th century confirm the long history of the place.

From around the 9th century the village was the seat of the noble family de Grandvillars , who owned the nearby villages of Morvillars and Thiancourt in addition to Grandvillars . Grandvillars has been the scene of historical incidents several times. Among other things, the peace treaty between Frédéric II of Ferrette and Count Richard III was signed there in 1226 . closed by Montbéliard .

Nevertheless, the area around Grandvillars was often heavily disputed by local dioceses and counties. In 1563, Jean Conrad de Grandvillars changed the town's original coat of arms by adding the coat of arms of his mother, Marie de Tavannes .

The Grandvillars area did not experience a certain stability until after the French Revolution . From around 1828, Grandvillars played an important role in the iron industry. Grandvillars is now the capital of the canton of the same name .
