Mairie Botans

Botans is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Botans is located 355 m above sea level, about five kilometers south of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the area of the Burgundian Gate , in a hollow west of the valley of the Savoureuse and its tributary river Douce, on the eastern edge of the hills of the Grand Bois.

View of the place

The area of the 2.29 km² large municipality covers a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The eastern border runs in the middle of the approximately one kilometer wide valley of the Savoureuse, which provides drainage to the south to the Allan . The Douce, which flows into the valley north of Botans, flows parallel to the Savoureuse. The waterway of the Canal de la Haute-Saône , a branch of the Rhine-Rhône Canal, is also located in the valley floor . Various former sand and gravel pits on the valley floor have now been flooded. In the north the border runs along the Douce.

From the valley level, which is an average of 340 m, the community area extends westward into the Botans hollow and the adjacent hills. These are partly with forest, partly with arable and meadow land. In the north-west is the height of Le Fays (393 m) and in the south-west Les Cerisiers , where the highest elevation of Botans is reached at 397 m.

The neighboring communities of Botans are Andelnans in the north, Sevenans in the east, Dorans in the southwest and Argiésans in the northwest.

history

Botans was first mentioned in a document in 1347. Initially under the influence of the Lords of Montbéliard, Botans came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Botans has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department since 1793, but remained in France in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace . In the municipality of Botans, a port was established on the Canal de la Haute-Saône in 1926, which served as a coal transshipment point for the city of Belfort. In 1973, however, the port was closed. Since 2000, Botans was initially part of the communauté d'agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

With a population of 242 (January 1, 2017), Botans is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 100 and 160 people, there has been significant population growth since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Botans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Over time, a commercial and industrial zone developed in the valley floor in the area of the Canal Harbor. Various companies in the transport industry, food processing, a tool factory and shops have settled here. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road that leads from Belfort to Montbéliard. The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about two kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Héricourt , Dorans and Andelnans. Botans is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line.
