Mairie

Bessoncourt (German earlier Bisch Ingen ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bessoncourt is 358 m above sea level. M., about six kilometers east of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the plains of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau between Belfort and the vast wooded area of the Bois de Bessoncourt, west of the Autruche stream.

The area of the 7.80 km² municipal area includes a section of the landscape with only weak relief in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The central part of the area is occupied by a plateau which is on average 360 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The plateau is drained by the Autruche , which flows south through a more than 500 m wide flood plain. To the east of the valley basin, the municipal area extends into the Bois de Bessoncourt and includes most of this extensive forest, which is a recreational area of Belfort. The forest area is subdivided by two parallel, elongated hills and the wide hollow in between, through which the Madeleine flows. This ensures the drainage of the area to the south to the Bourbeuse and thus to the Allaine .

Neighboring municipalities of Bessoncourt are Denney and Phaffans in the north, Frais in the east, Petit-Croix and Chèvremont in the south and Pérouse in the west.

history

Bessoncourt was first mentioned in a document in 823 under the name Beyssingen . The name Buchingen has been handed down from 1344 . In the middle of the 14th century, Bessoncourt came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Especially in 1618 the population suffered from a plague epidemic. Together with the Sundgau , Bessoncourt came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. From 1883 to 1886 the Fort of Bessoncourt (also Fort de Sénarmont) was built, which was part of the fortification ring of Belfort. From 1997 to 2016, Bessoncourt was the administrative seat of the communal association Communauté de communes du Tilleul (from 2014 Communauté de communes du Tilleul et de la Bourbeuse ), which became part of the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Attractions

The Sainte-Suzanne church was built in 1844 using red sandstone from the Vosges mountains. The wash house also dates from the 19th century . Northwest of the village is the fortification Fort de Bessoncourt (1883-1886), which served as a hospital in 1914 and then for a long time as an ammunition depot and has been owned by the municipality since 1993.

With 1245 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Bessoncourt is one of the smaller municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly at the beginning of the 20th century (706 people were still counted in 1896), strong population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bessoncourt was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Thanks to its convenient location near the motorway junction, an industrial and commercial zone has developed on the western edge of the town since the 1970s. Information technology companies, the automotive industry, a motorway repair shop and a large shopping center have settled here, which is why Bessoncourt is now a commuter community. There are also various small businesses in the old town center. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road D419, which leads from Belfort to Altkirch . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around 1.5 kilometers away. There are other road connections with Chèvremont, Denney and Phaffans. Bessoncourt is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line.
