geography

Courtelevant is 389 m above sea level, six kilometers east of Delle and about 21 kilometers southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the transition area between the plain of the Burgundian Gate and the northern foothills of the Jura , in the valley of the Vendline north of the heights of Florimont, near the border with Switzerland .

Courtelevant: view of the village

The area of the 5.82 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The southern part of the area is crossed in an east-west direction by the up to 400 m wide valley low of the Vendline, which provides drainage to the west via the Coeuvatte to the Allaine . The valley is flanked in the south by the densely forested Les Ragies plateau , on which Courtelevant's highest elevation is reached at 454 m.

To the north, the community area extends to the wide plateau of the Burgundian Gate, which averages 405 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. In hollows and valleys there are numerous ponds that were created for fish farming. In the far north the area extends into the headwaters of the Ruisseau de l'Écrevisse in the Grand Bois and to the northeast in the Banbois (419 m).

Courtelevant's neighboring communities are Suarce and Lepuix-Neuf in the north, Réchésy in the east, Courcelles in the south and Florimont in the west.

history

During the Roman period the important traffic route from Epomanduodurum ( Mandeure ) to Augusta Raurica crossed the municipality. Courtelevant is first mentioned in a document in 1262. The place name goes back to a combination of the Latin word curtis with the Germanic personal name Hilbung and means something like Hof des Hilbung . In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. It was part of the Florimont rule and formed its own parish since it was first mentioned.

Saint-Etienne church

During the Thirty Years War Courtelevant was sacked and ravaged by Swedish troops. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Courtelevant has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department since 1793, but remained in France in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace .

Attractions

The Saint-Étienne church dates from the 16th century but was extensively restored and modified in 1812. The mill, built in the 17th century and powered by the waters of the Vendline, was restored in the 20th century. Today it serves as a museum in which various techniques of grain milling in pre-industrial times are shown. The center is characterized by various half-timbered houses in the traditional Alsatian style of the 18th and 19th centuries.

With 419 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Courtelevant is one of the small communes of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (310 people were still counted in 1891), population growth has been recorded again, especially since the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Courtelevant was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D463 road from Delle to Saint-Louis . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 21 kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Florimont, Réchésy and Lepuix-Neuf.
