The Vendline (known as the Vendeline in France ) is a small river that runs in the border area between Switzerland and France . It rises in the municipality of Vendlincourt , in the Swiss canton of Jura , initially drains in a northerly direction, reaches French territory between Beurnevésin and Réchésy , then swings to the northwest and after a total of 16 kilometers flows into the municipality of Florimont , in the French department Territoire de Belfort, as a right tributary in the Coeuvatte .

course

The river is named after its place of origin, the municipality of Vendlincourt in the Ajoie . The headwaters of the Vendline are located in the undulating landscape of the Table Jura northeast of the town of Porrentruy at about 440 meters above sea level at the northern foot of the Bois Juré ridge. First, the Vendline flows north through a wide valley basin, passing through the municipalities of Bonfol and Beurnevésin . In the east it is accompanied by a wooded hill (up to 480 m), which forms the main watershed between the catchment areas of the Rhône and the Rhine . Below Beurnevésin, the Vendline crosses the forest heights of the Mont (in the west) and the Côtes (in the east) in a valley up to 100 m deep. After about seven kilometers of flow, it crosses the border from Switzerland to France. At Réchésy , the Vendline steps out into the flat landscape of the Burgundian Gate between the Vosges and the Jura . It turns here first in a north-westerly and later in a westerly direction. It flows through another broad valley basin along the northernmost foothills of the Table Jura and has a gradient of less than 1% up to its mouth.

Hydrology

The Vendline has a pluvial discharge regime with strongly fluctuating water levels. Floods mainly occur in the winter months and in spring when there is heavy rainfall in combination with snowmelt. Summer dry periods are responsible for very low water levels. The hydropower of the Vendline was previously used to operate various mills.
