The striped heron ( Tigrisoma fasciatum ) is a common heron in South America .

features

The striped heron reaches a body length of 60 to 70 cm. The plumage is gray or brown with darker horizontal stripes. The coloration varies between the subspecies. The sexes show a low sexual dimorphism , since the male is colored slightly more contrasting than the female.

Occurrence

Its distribution area includes Central and South America . From Costa Rica via Colombia it is distributed along the eastern slopes of the Andes to Bolivia . Another occurrence is in southeastern Brazil and northern Argentina . The habitat are moist forests in mountainous regions, where striped herons live along densely vegetated river banks.

The striped heron lives mostly solitary and only comes together in pairs during the breeding season. He is a stalker who catches his prey both on land and in the water. Its prey animals include small fish and insects .
