Lepuix is located at 509 m above sea level, two kilometers north of Giromagny and about 14 kilometers north of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends into the southern Vosges , in a valley widening on the upper reaches of the Savoureuse and at the mouth of the Beusinière, in the chains of the Ballon d'Alsace, which run south . It is also part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 29.69 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the southern Vosges. The central part of the area is crossed by the Savoureuse valley in a north-south direction. The flat valley floor is around one kilometer wide, averages 510 m and is mainly used for agriculture outside of the settlement area. To the south, the border runs on the outskirts of Giromagny, where the Savoureuse flows into the Giromagny basin at the foot of the Vosges.

The municipality covers the entire upper catchment area of the Savoureuse. It has a strong relief and the predominantly wooded, mostly steep slopes are subdivided by numerous side valleys and erosion channels. The largest side stream on the community area is the Beusinière , which flows into the Savoureuse at Lepuix. The Savoureuse and its tributaries overcome the differences in altitude with various waterfalls, including the Cascade du Rummel, the Saut de la Cuvotte and the Saut de la Truite. The surrounding mountain slopes are criss-crossed by rocks in various places, the most striking being those of the Roches du Cerf in the Malvaux gorge.

The valley is flanked on both sides by the mountain ranges of the Ballon d'Alsace, which extend to the south. To the west, the heights of Planche des Belles Filles (1148 m), Ballon Saint-Antoine (1124 m), Tête de Demesy (1132 m) and Tête des Fougères (1115 m) separate the valleys of Savoureuse and Rahin . In the east, the border runs on the heights of Mont Jean (786 m), Mont Rouchon (976 m) and Tremontkopf (1089 m), which form the watershed to the catchment areas of Rosemontoise and Doller . In the far north, the community area extends to the broad, forest-free hilltop of the Ballon d'Alsace, on which the highest elevation of Lepuix is reached at 1244 m.

In addition to the actual village, Lepuix has several hamlets and numerous farms, including:

  • Chauveroche (520 m) in the Beusinière valley on the western outskirts
  • Malvaux (535 m) in the Savoureuse valley below the Malvaux valley
  • Les Sapins (1120 m) on the southern flank of the Ballon d'Alsace

Neighboring municipalities of Lepuix are Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle in the north, Sewen , Riervescemont and Vescemont in the east, Giromagny and Auxelles-Haut in the south and Plancher-les-Mines in the west.

history

Lepuix was first mentioned in a document in 1347. Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century . It was then part of the Rosemont dominion . Together with the Sundgau , Lepuix came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 . Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France.

Since the Middle Ages , the numerous deposits of lead , copper and silver in the vicinity of Lepuix have been exploited and smelted in mines , for which the hydropower of the Savoureuse was used on the one hand to operate the copper mills and on the other hand wood from the great forests for the production of charcoal . Lepuix therefore developed very early into a community shaped by mining and industry. In the course of the 19th century, mining was replaced by new branches of industry such as wood processing , papermaking and weaving . Today Lepuix is a member of the eight communes community association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse.

Attractions

The Church of the Birth of Our Lady ( Église Notre-Dame de la Nativité ) was built in the 18th century and modified in the 19th century. It has a rich interior (see: List of Monuments historiques in Lepuix ), including wooden and plaster statues from the 17th century. The natural landscape with waterfalls, ponds and rocks as well as the Ballon d'Alsace viewpoint (Parc Naturel Régional Ballons des Vosges) are among the recreational areas of the region.

With 1154 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Lepuix is one of the smaller municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. Lepuix reached its highest level in terms of population as early as the mid-1860s when a little more than 2000 people were counted. In 1906 Lepuix had 1995 inhabitants; thereafter a marked decrease in population by almost 50% until 1982. Since then, a slightly increasing trend has been observed again.

Economy and Infrastructure

From early on, Lepuix was mainly a village characterized by trade and industry. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses. The textile industry, wood processing and precision mechanics are among the important sectors. There are also many retail shops for daily needs in Lepuix. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road D465 that leads from Belfort via Giromagny to Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 kilometers away. Another regional road connection is via the Col de Sewen with Masevaux .
