The 1247 m high Alsatian Belchen ( French Ballon d'Alsace , pronunciation : [ baˌlõ dalˈzas ]), also Welscher Belchen , is an important mountain in Alsace in the south of the Vosges . This is where the Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions meet .

Location and geography

The massif of the Ballon d'Alsace falls to three highly structured valley areas out: on the south the valley which runs Savoureuse the Belfort Gap out to the northwest drain numerous rock basin in the Mosel , and begins with rugged rock crashing to the east of Mount d'Alfeld Lac back the valley of the Doller . The watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean runs over the summit . The area around the Alsatian Belchen is one of the wettest areas in France .

The summit area belongs to four municipalities, four départements and two regions :

The Alsatian Belchen was mythologically important as the western corner point of the Belchen triangle and as the central point of the Belchen system .

Use and tourism

A road that connects the Moselle valley in the northwest with the valleys of the Savoureuse in the south and the Doller in the east touches the summit at an altitude of 1171 meters.

The mountain range in the Regional Nature Park Ballons des Vosges is frequented by numerous hikers because of its varied landscape, rich in rocks, lakes and waterfalls, and also because of the clean air. From the summit there is a comprehensive panorama , especially towards the Swiss Alps and Mont Blanc . Other activities include mountain biking and paragliding . Downhill runs and cross-country skiing are possible in the winter sports area .

The Alsatian Belchen was the scene of the first mountain stage of the Tour de France on July 10, 1905 , in which only Georges Passerieu managed the ascent without getting off his bike. The mountain was conquered 100 years later in the Tour de France 2005 for the anniversary on the 9th stage .
