Host bridge
The components of modern computers communicate through a hierarchy of data lines called buses . The system bus to which the processor itself is connected is located at the highest level of this hierarchy . However, only a few components are connected directly to the system bus. Rather, the system bus is first connected to other buses via a host bridge . The host bridge is therefore a connection module in computer systems that masters both the protocol of the system bus and selected protocols of other buses that are to be connected to the system bus. It also has a buffer memory to handle different transfer rates. In modern personal computers , in particular the memory bus to the main memory, the AGP bus to the graphics card and the PCI bus are connected to the host bridge . For its part, other buses are coupled to the PCI bus via bridges, but these are not referred to as host bridges.
