Georges Passerieu (born November 18, 1885 in London , † May 5, 1928 in Épinay-sur-Orge ) was a French cyclist .
biography
The London-born Frenchman Georges Passerieu had a British mother and a French father, which is why he was named l'Anglais du Paris in the peloton . In 1905 he won the Paris-Reims race as an amateur and became French champion of the stayers .
As a result, Passerieu received a professional contract in a team sponsored by the car manufacturer Peugeot the following year . In 1907 he decided Paris – Roubaix for himself. He reached the Velodrome roubaisien a little ahead of the field alone. At the entrance to the cycling track, he was stopped by a police officer who checked that he had paid the necessary fee for using the roads. The organizing newspaper L'Auto urgently advised drivers to pay this fee before the race. Despite this stay, Passerieu managed to get on the train before Cyrille Van Hauwaert . He crossed the finish line just as Van Hauwaert reached the track.
Between 1906 and 1908, Passerieu won a total of seven stages in the Tour de France . In the overall ranking he finished two to four for three consecutive years. In 1908, Passerieu was the only rider to climb the ascent to Ballon d'Alsace without getting off his bike, all the other riders pushed their bikes up the mountain.
In the 600-kilometer one-day race Bordeaux – Paris , Passerieu finished fourth in 1908 and 1913. At the first edition of the Berlin six-day race in 1909, he finished third with Maurice Brocco .
Georges Passerieu died in 1928 at the age of 42 in a mental hospital in Brittany .
