The Tour de France 1913 took place from June 28th to July 26th. It led over 15 stages and was 5388 kilometers long. The point system of previous years was replaced by time measurement.
Race course
The stage locations of this tour partly corresponded to those of the previous year, but these were driven in the opposite direction to 1912. There is agreement in the first stages, which roughly correspond to stages 9 to 15 of 1912. The first three stages of 1912 correspond to the 13th to 15th stage. This year the tour was 5388 kilometers long, 69 km longer than in 1912. Of the 140 riders who started, only 25 finished the tour. A novelty was the first guest appearance in Switzerland with a stage, after Switzerland had been traveled since 1907. For the first time, a Dane ( Christian Christensen ) and a Tunisian (Ali Neffati) competed.
The Belgian Philippe Thys , who later won the tour first three times, ultimately led the ranking in Paris. This year the cornerstone of a legend was also laid. The Frenchman Eugène Christophe , the first to wear the yellow jersey in 1919 , suffered a broken fork on his bike on the descent from the Col du Tourmalet . He had to walk the next 14 kilometers to repair his bike. He was not allowed to get help in the forge, but still managed to repair his bike. Christophe was overall seventh, his nickname " le Vieux Gaulois " ( French , the old Gaul ) he received after this stage.
