The 76th Tour de France took place from July 1 to July 23, 1989. It ran over 3285 km in 21 stages, making it one of the shortest. 198 cyclists took part in this tour , of which 138 were classified.
This tour resulted in the tightest decision in the history of the tour. Greg LeMond won by eight seconds over his French rival Laurent Fignon . Before the last stage, a time trial with the finish line on the Parisian Avenue des Champs-Élysées , Fignon was leading by 50 seconds. LeMond used what was then a new type of aerodynamic handlebar and helmet.
Race course
At the prologue in Luxembourg, defending champion Pedro Delgado curiously missed his start by more than two and a half minutes. At the end of the three weeks, Delgado was still third.
After the first stage, Acácio da Silva took over the yellow jersey from prologue winner Erik Breukink and was the first Portuguese to wear yellow.
On stage 5, LeMond wore the leader's yellow jersey in the individual time trial, while Fignon took it from him on stage 10. After the 15th stage, LeMond was back in front for two days before Fignon took back the jersey on the 17th stage. At no point in the race was the gap more than a minute.
The later five-time winner Miguel Induráin finished his first tour in 17th and was able to win a stage.
