PDM-Concorde was a Dutch cycling team in professional road cycling from 1986 to 1992 .

Organization and profile

The team's main sponsor was Philips Dupont Magnetics , a joint venture between the electronics company Philips and the chemical company DuPont . The wheel outfitter was the Dutch brand Concorde from the Italian manufacturer Ciocc .

Team manager was initially Roy Schuiten . He was supported by Jan Gisbers as sports director , who took over the managerial position in 1987. Other sporting directors were Piet van der Kruijs and Ferdi van den Haute.

The team was particularly successful in the classics and won in particular Lüttich – Bastogne – Lüttich in 1988 and 1989 and the Giro di Lombardia in 1991.

However, the outstanding results also included second places for drivers Pedro Delgado in the 1987 Tour de France and Steven Rooks in the 1988 edition , as well as Erik Breukink's third place in 1990 . The team also won the Tour de France team championship in 1988 and 1989 .

After the 1992 season the team was sold to Festina .

Doping and medical

In the 1988 Tour de France the PDM driver was Gert-Jan Theunisse in second place after lying on testosterone positive doping test is a 10-minute time penalty. The race was won by his former teammate Pedro Delgado; his team-mate at the time, Steven Rooks, moved up to second place. Bertus Fok, who was then a carer (" Soigneur ") for the team , told the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant in January 2013 that seven of the eight drivers on the team at that time had used illegal substances.

The team left the Tour de France in 1991 after a food poisoning medical incident among all riders in the race. In a TV documentary broadcast in 2008, 1990 and 1991 team members and team doctor Wim Sanders said the cause was improper storage of Intralipid, a dietary supplement injected into drivers.

In November 1997 the internet service cyclingnews.com reported on a Dutch doping test concerning the team. Team doctor Wim Sanders was at the center of the investigation, which was triggered by a complaint from the team's general manager, Manfred Krikke. It was said that Sanders had supplied the team with anabolic steroids and EPO . He was also responsible for the intralipid affair at the Tour de France in 1991. According to cyclingnews.com, 1990 was the peak of drug abuse in the team. It happened that two drivers had to end their careers due to heart problems, although the connection to doping remained unclear. Team manager Gisbers denied any knowledge of doping in the team.
