The 78th Tour de France took place from July 6th to 28th, 1991 and led the riders on 21 stages over 3914 kilometers. It was the last edition of the Tour of France in which half-stages were driven. 198 racing drivers took part in the tour, of which 158 were classified. Miguel Indurain took his first of five wins.
Race course
The Dane Rolf Sørensen was able to look forward to a few days in the front runner position in the first week of the tour, but then retired while in the lead due to a fall.
Thierry Marie , who won the prologue, ran away early on the fifth stage and, after a solo escape over 234 km, won Le Havre . The almost two minutes advantage that he had at the finish also gave him the yellow jersey , which he was only able to defend for two days before last year's winner Greg Lemond won it in the seven stage time trial .
The time trial, which the eventual winner Miguel Indurain from Spain was able to win, brought Lemond into the front runner position, but a few days later in the Pyrenees on the stage to Val Louron he could no longer follow Claudio Chiappucci and Indurain on the Col du Tourmalet and acted over seven minutes behind. Indurain let Chiappucci win the day, but slipped into the yellow jersey himself and defended the lead as far as Paris. He even increased his lead when he later won the second time trial. Overall, Indurain achieved an average speed of 38.747 km / h.
The Uzbek Jamolidin Abduschaparov , who had already celebrated two stage wins, had a hard fall in the last sprint on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées , but he still won the green jersey . In the mountain classification , Claudio Chiappucci prevailed against Thierry Claveyrolat.
The Dutch team PDM-Concorde officially withdrew their drivers from the race due to illness after the stage to Saint-Herblain , but there was widespread doping speculation.
