The 15th Tour de France took place from June 26th to July 24th, 1921. The 123 riders, divided into two performance classes, covered 5484 km over 15 stages. 38 drivers reached the destination.
Race course
The route of the tour was very similar to the course of the tour in 1920 : after starting in Argenteuil near Paris , it went counterclockwise to Brittany , the Pyrenees , along the Mediterranean over the Alps and Alsace back to Paris, where the tour ended in the Parc des Princes .
The Belgian Léon Scieur took over the overall lead by winning the third stage and was able to defend it until Paris. Scieur covered the 5484 km with an average of 24.720 km / h. Scieur came from the same village as the former tour winner Firmin Lambot , the two are the only tour winners who come from the same place. As in the previous year, Honoré Barthélémy was the best French rider despite numerous technical defects and came third in the overall standings.
One innovation of the 15th tour was that the rider's start number had to be attached to the racing bikes. The large increase in support vehicles posed problems for the tour organizers: There were real traffic jams in which some drivers got stuck. Stricter regulations helped.
