The 79th Tour de France took place from July 4th to 26th, 1992 and covered 21 stages over 3983 km. The tour led through seven countries: Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and Italy. To achieve this, the tour organization left out the Pyrenees for the first time since the Tour de France in 1910 . 198 racing drivers took part in the tour , of which 130 were classified.
Race course
The Spaniard Miguel Induráin , who started as the defending champion, won the prologue on the first day , but had to give up the yellow jersey to the Swiss Alex Zülle after the first stage . The leadership jersey slipped over the shoulders of Richard Virusque to Pascal Lino , who had a lead of seven minutes in a ten-man leading group on the third stage.
Only on the first difficult mountain stage over five passes to Sestriere did Lino have to give the jersey back to Induráin. At this stage, the Italian Claudio Chiappucci crowned a 125 km solo ride with the day's victory.
With his victories in the two time trials and the prologue, Induráin was able to prevail against the Italian Chiappucci, who was better on the mountain, who not only took second place in the overall ranking but also the mountain ranking. Induráin, who mastered the tour at an average speed of 39.504 km / h, secured the "double" in the big tours with his success, having previously won the Giro d'Italia .
In the battle for the points classification , Laurent Jalabert narrowly prevailed against the Belgian Johan Museeuw , Jalabert also won the sixth stage in the sprint of a breakaway group.
Olaf Ludwig won the prestigious last stage to Paris in a mass sprint on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées .
