Team evaluation France

The 38th Tour de France took place from July 4th to 29th, 1951 and ran over 4692 km on 24 stages. For the first time since 1926 and only for the second time ever, Paris was not the starting point of the Tour de France. 123 racing drivers took part in the tour, 66 of which were classified.

Race course

Fausto Coppi , winner of the 1949 tour , did not do a good tour after his brother's fatal accident in a bicycle race and finished in tenth place in the end. Only on the 20th stage did he show his skills and became the stage winner after a solo escape.

In the first half of the tour there was no clear lead by a driver, various drivers wore the yellow jersey . The Dutchman Wim van Est was able to take the lead after his stage win on the twelfth section, the next day he had to give up after a fall. Gilbert Bauvin took over the lead from him , but only one day later the Swiss Hugo Koblet was able to take over the yellow jersey: In his third stage win on his first tour, he was able to outrun everyone except Coppi on the mountain stage to Luchon . Koblet had already won the first time trial and on the eleventh stage, on the stage to Agen after a solo escape over 135 km.

Koblet did not give up the lead in the overall standings until Paris, so that after Ferdy Kübler a Swiss can win the Tour de France for the second time in a row. Koblet even crowned his performance with two more stage wins.

The Frenchman Raphaël Géminiani , who was able to win a stage, was second in the overall standings, clearly behind the Swiss, but was able to win the mountain classification.
