Race course

Jacques Anquetil , who had won the Tour de France four times in a row, brought his fiercest rival from the previous year , Raymond Poulidor, into the role of favorite by missing out in 1965 .

On his first Tour de France, the 23-year-old Italian Felice Gimondi won the third stage and took on the yellow jersey . At this point, Poulidor was already more than three minutes behind in the overall standings, was unable to catch up and was second at the end of the tour.

On the 14th stage on the Mont Ventoux, Poulidor attacked and came within 34 seconds of Gimondi, who had won the Tour de l'Avenir the previous year. Together with Julio Jiménez , Poulidor managed to drive away Gimondi, who limited his gap to 1:38 minutes. The Italian won the two time trials on the 18th and 22nd stage. For Poulidor only second place remained, but acknowledged the surprise victory of the Italian: "Gimondi won because he was better."

The Spaniard Jiménez won the mountain classification by a large margin and was also able to win two mountain stages , Jan Janssen won the green jersey for the second time. Rik Van Looy won two stages and was able to wear the yellow jersey for two days after his victory on the first stage.
