La Baule is a French municipality with 16,132 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . It is located about 70 km west of Nantes and 450 km southwest of Paris directly on the Atlantic coast .

La Baule-Escoublac is characterized by tourism and known for its beaches. In the bay in front of La Baule, one of the longest bathing beaches in Europe is twelve kilometers long. La Baule borders directly on the port of Le Pouliguen to the west and Pornichet to the east . Due to the heavy tourism, TGV to and from Paris also stop at the local train station on the Saint-Nazaire – Le Croisic line .

From 1941 to 1943, maintained Navy into Rochefort naval hospital . Parts of Lothar-Günther Buchheim's anti-war novels The Boat and The Fortress are set in La Baule because the first-person narrator is quartered in this city.

Town twinning

La Baule-Escoublac maintains town twinning with Homburg in Saarland ( Germany ), with Inverness in Scotland and with Vila Real de Santo António in Portugal .

Sports

In October 2016, a three-cushion World Cup was held in La Baule for the first time . The winner was Murat Naci Çoklu from Turkey, ahead of the Spaniard Daniel Sánchez .

In the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, La Baule-Escoublac was a popular seaside resort. Several grand hotels and villas have been preserved from this period.
