The 13th Tour de France took place from June 29th to July 27th, 1919. The first tour after a four-year hiatus due to the First World War had 15 stages on which the riders had to cover 5,560 km. This made this tour the second longest in tour history. Of the only 67 participants, only 10 arrived in Paris.
Race course
The tour started in Paris , destination was again the Paris Parc des Princes . For the third time, the tour took place counter-clockwise. The route also included stages in Alsace , which belonged to France again after the end of the World War.
The Belgian Jean Rossius won the first stage, but was not classified as overall leader due to a 30-minute time penalty as he presented Philippe Thys with a water bottle. The race management judged this as prohibited assistance from another driver. The second stage Henri Pélissier took over the overall lead instead. Pélissier was then able to win the second stage. His brother Francis won the third stage. From the tenth stage, the overall leader wore the yellow jersey for the first time . Frenchman Eugène Christophe was the first to wear this jersey, which visibly presented the leaders of the overall standings.
Christophe, already 35 years old, had a solid lead of 28 minutes, which he lost when he lost more than an hour repairing his bike. According to the current regulations, the drivers had to repair their bikes themselves. So Firmin Lambot was able to pull by and win the tour. His average speed during the tour was 24.054 km / h.
