The 36th Tour de France led from June 30 to July 21, 1949 on 21 stages over 4808 km and ended with an Italian double victory. 120 racing drivers took part in the tour, 55 of which were classified.
Race course
On the fifth stage, which the Swiss Ferdy Kübler won, the Italian Fausto Coppi fell and was a big deficit. At the foot of the Pyrenees, Coppi was half an hour behind the top in the overall standings and began his race to catch up with a win in the first time trial.
In the Alps, Coppi's farmer Gino Bartali took over the yellow jersey with a stage win on stage 16 . But last year's winner only had one day's lead in the overall standings before Coppi overtook Bartali with a stage win the next day. After he had also won the second time trial, Coppi reached the finish in Paris with a lead of 10 minutes on his pursuer.
Coppi also won the mountain classification ahead of Bartali; He also benefited in the overall standings from his strong performance on the mountain, as time credits were awarded on the passes and mountain arrivals. Coppi had already won the Giro d'Italia in spring 1949 . This made him the first cyclist to achieve a double tour and giro victory in the same year.
