The 32nd Tour de France took place from July 5th to 31st, 1938 and led the 96 starters on 21 stages over 4694 km. By abolishing the team time trial , the individual performance of the individual driver has been upgraded. 55 drivers reached the finish in Paris and were classified.

Race course

The 1938 Tour de France was determined by the duel between Belgian Félicien Vervaecke and Italian Gino Bartali . In the Pyrenees , Vervaecke won the stage from Pau to Luchon and took over the yellow jersey .

But on the toughest stage in the Alps from Digne-les-Bains to Briançon over the Col d'Allos , the Col de Vars and the Col d'Izoard , Bartali was able to show off and took off his competitor over 17 minutes. In addition, there were time credits totaling 5:43 minutes because the Italian not only won the stage, but also crossed all the mountains first. His lead in the overall standings that he had gained on this stage melted down a little on the way to Paris, but was no longer in danger.

Bartali, who could also look forward to winning the mountain classification, achieved an average speed of 31.565 km / h on the tour. Vervaecke still won the team championship with his Belgian team.

Antonin Magne, who won the Tour in 1931 and 1934 , ended his cycling career appropriately with a stage win on the last stage to Paris in the Parc des Princes . Also André Leducq , Tour winner in 1930 and 1932 could be happy about such a farewell. Together with Magne he had run away and in the sprint of the two there was no clear winner, so the commissioners declared both drivers the stage winners.
