The Col d'Allos is a road pass in the French department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence . The pass is at 2247  m . The crossing connects Barcelonnette ( 1150  m ) in the Ubaye valley with Allos , Colmars ( 1261  m ), where the road over the Col des Champs also starts, and Saint-André-les-Alpes ( 889  m ).

Like the parallel north-south connections Col de la Cayolle and Col de la Bonette, the Col d'Allos is located in the Mercantour National Park of the French Maritime Alps . The Verdon River rises near the top of the pass and later runs through the spectacular Grand Canyon du Verdon .

Tour de France

The Col d'Allos was always on the Tour de France program between 1911 and 1939 . With 34 crossings, it is one of the ten most frequently used passes on the Tour of France. In the last few decades, however, it has rarely been taken into account, for the last time in the 17th stage of the Tour of 2015 (as of July 2015). Most recently he was assigned to the 1st category in the mountain classification.

Together with the Col des Champs and the Col de la Cayolle, the Col d'Allos forms a popular circuit for racing cyclists. Both climbs are equipped with special signs for cyclists . While these signs are placed at intervals of approximately one kilometer on the ascent of Barcelonnette , they are placed at wider and irregular intervals on the ascent of Colmars . In July and August, the Col d'Allos is reserved for cyclists on Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
