The Col de la Croix de Fer ( German " Iron Cross Pass ") is a French Alpine pass.

Geographical location

The 2067 meter high crossing is in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region ( Savoie department ) on the D 926 and connects Rochetaillée near Le Bourg-d'Oisans in the Romanche Valley with Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne on the Arc River in the Maurienne area .

The approach from the northeast from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne measures 29.5 km, that from the southwest from Rochetaillée 31.5 km. When approaching from Rochetaillée, 2.5 km before the top of the pass, the road branches off to Col du Glandon ( 1924  m ), which is reached after a few hundred meters. From the Col du Glandon you can get to Saint-Etienne-de-Cuines in the Maurienne Valley (22 km).

The climb from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne is marked with special signs for cyclists every kilometer .

The Col de la Croix de Fer has been part of the Tour de France 18 times , but was never a stage destination. The Tour de France first climbed the pass in 1947, and most recently it was used on two consecutive days on July 24th and 25th, 2015 during the 19th and 20th stages of the 2015 Tour de France . The winner of the 2012 mountain classification was honored with the souvenir Henri Desgrange .
