Les Gets is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Les Gets is located at 1163 m , near the tourist resort of Morzine , 28 kilometers south-southeast of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The summer and winter sports resort extends to the top of the Col des Gets at the transition from Chablais to Faucigny , in the Savoy Alps at the eastern foot of Mont Chéry .
The area of the 29.98 km² municipal area includes a section of the Chablais Alps. The main settlement area is the Col des Gets pass, a furrow that extends in a south-west-north-east direction. The pass is in the west of Mont Chéry (with 1827 meters the highest elevation of Les Gets) and to the east of Le Pléney ( 1508 m ), Col du Ranfolly ( 1657 m ) and Pointe de la Turche ( 1605 m flanked). The northern part of the municipality is drained by a side stream of the Dranse de Morzine through the Vallée d'Aulps to Lake Geneva . The south-western part, on the other hand, lies in the catchment area of the Giffre , which leads the water to the Arve .
Les Gets includes various hamlet and holiday settlements on the slopes in the Col des Gets area. Neighboring communities to Les Gets are La Côte-d'Arbroz in the north, Morzine in the east and Verchaix and Taninges in the south.
history
Les Gets was already a parish in the 12th century. The place name comes from the late Latin word gistum (camp, night camp).
Attractions
The village church Eglise des Gets dates from the 19th century, was restored in 1991 and has a mechanical organ. Also worth seeing is the Musée de la Musique mécanique in a building from the 16th century, in which barrel organs, mechanical pianos and music automatons are exhibited.

With 1239 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Les Gets is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades there has been a significant, meanwhile slowed growth in the number of inhabitants. Outside the old village, numerous single-family houses and holiday apartments were built.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Les Gets was a predominantly agricultural village. Forestry and wood processing (sawmills) always had a special meaning. In the meantime, thanks to its proximity to Morzine, the village has developed into a summer and winter sports resort with many tourist facilities. The slopes on both sides of the Col des Gets are accessible by numerous mountain railways and ski lifts. Les Gets thus forms the most south-westerly part of the large, cross-border winter sports area of Portes du Soleil . As a member of the Alpine Pearls cooperation , Les Gets focuses on soft tourism.
The village is located on the main road from Thonon-les-Bains through the Vallée d'Aulps to Cluses in the Arve Valley.
