Onnion is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Onnion is located at 791  m , about 23 kilometers south of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Faucigny , on the sun-exposed southern slope in a basin of the Vallée du Risse, at the eastern foot of the Massif des Brasses, in the Savoy Alps .

The area of the 18.97 km² municipal area includes the central section of the Vallée du Risse. The valley basin is traversed from northeast to southwest by the Risse , a tributary of the Giffre in the catchment area of the Arve . To the south, the valley widening is sealed off by the rock walls on both sides of the Gorges du Risse. In the west, the valley is flanked by the heights of the Massif des Brasses with the Plaine Joux high plateau ( 1,300  m ), with the municipal area reaching north to the slope of the Pointe de Miribel . To the east, the municipality extends over densely forested slopes to the Tête des Follys ( 1764  m ) and the Pointe de Chavannais , on which the highest point of Onnion is reached at 1851  m .

Community structure

In addition to the actual village center, Onnion includes various hamlet settlements, including:

  • La Villaz ( 970  m ) on the ascent to the Plaine Joux plateau
  • La Léchère ( 800  m ) to the east adjoining the place
  • Sométy ( 876  m ) on the slope of the Haute-Pointe east of the Risse

Economy and Infrastructure

Onnion was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The Massif des Brasses has developed into a winter sports area in recent decades. The slopes are accessed by mountain railways and ski lifts.

The village is on the connecting road that leads from Thonon-les-Bains over the Col de Jambaz to Saint-Jeoire .
