Mégevette is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Mégevette is located at 884 m , about 20 kilometers south of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends in an open high valley on the upper Risse , at the eastern foot of the Pointe de Miribel, in the Savoy Alps .
The area of the 21.65 km² municipal area includes the uppermost section of the Vallée du Risse. The wide, open valley extends north-south, receives several tributaries through short side streams and is drained from the crack to the Giffre and thus to the Arve . The high valley is sealed off to the south by the narrow valley at Rocher de Culaz . It is flanked to the west by the heights of the Pointe de Miribel ( 1581 m ) and the Montagne d'Hirmentaz ( 1596 m ). To the north, the municipality extends to the Col de Jambaz. The eastern boundary of the high valley is formed by the Pointe des Jottis ( 1546 m ), the Pointe des Follys ( 1713 m ) and the Tête des Follys , on which Mégevette's highest point is reached at 1764 m . A small part of the municipal area is located in the catchment area of the Vallée du Brevon (tributary of the Dranse ).
Various hamlet settlements belong to Mégevette, including La Culaz ( 880 m ), Les Moulins ( 910 m ) in the valley and Les Fornets ( 1000 m ) on the eastern slope of the valley. Neighboring municipalities of Mégevette are Bellevaux in the north and east, Mieussy and Onnion in the south and Villard and Habère-Lullin in the west.
history
The high valley of the Risse around Mégevette was reclaimed in the Middle Ages by monks from the Abbey of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps . It was not until 1923 that Mégevette moved from the Arrondissement of Thonon-les-Bains to the canton of Saint-Jeoire in the Arrondissement of Bonneville .
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Nicolas was built between 1872 and 1880 on the site of an earlier church. It shows a mixture of the styles Neo-Romanesque and Italian Renaissance.

With 581 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Mégevette is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. After the population had decreased markedly in the course of the 20th century (in 1901 Mégevette still had 1007 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the mid-1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Mégevette was a predominantly agricultural and forestry village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades summer and winter tourism has also developed and some tourist facilities have emerged.
The village is on the connecting road that leads from Thonon-les-Bains over the Col de Jambaz to Saint-Jeoire . Another road connection is with Mieussy.
