Saint-Jean-d'Aulps , officially to 1961 Saint-Jean-d'Aulph called, is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is located at 815  m , 20 kilometers southeast of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in central Chablais , in a valley widening of the Vallée d'Aulps on both sides of the Dranse de Morzine , at the western foot of the Roc de Tavaneuse in the northern Savoy Alps .

The area of the 40.19 km² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée d'Aulps. The Dranse de Morzine, which runs from the south-south-east to the north-north-west, forms a valley widening into which short mountain streams flow from both sides. In the north, the border lies in the area of the narrow point of the Défilé des Tines. To the east, the municipality extends to the heights of Pointe de Cercle ( 1808  m ), Pic de la Corne ( 2084  m ), Roc de Tavaneuse ( 2156  m ) and to the Pointe d'Entre deux Pertuis , ( 2180  m ). In the south-west the municipal area includes the catchment area of the Ruisseau du Jourdil and extends to the Roc d'Enfer , on which the highest point of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is reached at 2244  m . Above the densely wooded slopes there are larger alpine meadows.

Community structure

In addition to the actual village center, various hamlet settlements belong to Saint-Jean-d'Aulps, namely:

  • Bas Thex ( 802  m ) near the Défilé des Tines
  • L'Abbaye ( 810  m ) in the valley floor to the right of the Dranse de Morzine
  • Mont d'Évian ( 1000  m ) on the eastern slope of the valley above the village

  • Graydon ( 1350  m ), an alpine settlement in a hollow northeast of the Roc d'Enfer

Neighboring communities of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps are Le Biot in the north, Abondance in the east, Montriond , Essert-Romand and La Côte-d'Arbroz in the south, and Bellevaux and Seytroux in the west.

history

The village, whose Latin name was Sanctus Johannis Alpibus , emerged around the Benedictine and later Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame-d'Aulps , founded in 1095 . In the 12th century the abbey became an important pilgrimage destination and, through numerous donations, it acquired large land holdings in the Haut-Chablais. Gradual decline began towards the end of the 15th century, and the last monks left the abbey in 1793. When the church of Moussière fell victim to a fire in 1823, rock material from the abbey church was used for the reconstruction, which subsequently fell into more and more ruins.

Until 1961 the municipality was called Saint-Jean-d'Aulph, since then the current name has been official.

Attractions

The current village church was built in the neo-Gothic style in the first half of the 19th century . The ruins of the former abbey church and cloister, which date from the 12th and 13th centuries, have been preserved. The remains of the building, classified as a Monument Historique in 1902 , have been restored. Also worth seeing are chapels in Bas Thex, on the Alp near Graydon (Chapelle de l'Immaculée-Conception, built in 1859) and in Essert la Pierre (Notre Dame de Compassion, founded in 1534 and rebuilt in 1832). Old characteristic houses have been preserved in the town center. The hamlet of Essert la Pierre also has a typical townscape with traditional houses.

With 1,440 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. After the population had decreased markedly in the course of the 20th century (in 1921 Saint-Jean-d'Aulps still had 1999 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the mid-1970s. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps was a predominantly agricultural village. In the meantime the village has developed into a summer and winter sports station with numerous tourist facilities. The slopes above La Moussière and in the area of the Alpine settlement of Graydon are accessible by mountain railways and ski lifts.

The village is located on the main road from Thonon-les-Bains through the Vallée d'Aulps to Morzine .
