Lugrin is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Lugrin is located at 413  m , 15 kilometers east of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends in Chablais, in a panoramic position on the lower northern slope of the Savoy Pre-Alps, around 40 meters above the lake level of Lake Geneva .

The area of ​​the 13.22 square kilometers large municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva; the lakeshore is about six kilometers. From the lakeshore, the community area extends over the steadily rising slope into the Bois des Rigoles forest area , which is criss-crossed by several erosion channels. Above this forest, an area terrace extends to around 870  m , the easternmost part of the Pays de Gavot. This is followed by the forest height of Mont Bénand , on which the highest elevation of Lugrin is reached at 1244  m . To the east of Lugrin, the parish soil extends to the rocky steep slope near Meillerie.

history

The municipal area of ​​Lugrin was inhabited very early. Traces from the Neolithic , Roman and Burgundian times have been found. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century under the name ad Logrino . The place name is probably of Celtic origin.

Attractions

The village church dates from the 19th century. The district of Tourronde used to be a typical fishing village. There are several castles in the vicinity of Lugrin, including the Château de Blonay (16th century, modified in the 19th century) near the lake, the Château d'Alleman and the Manoir des Châtillons.

With 2,435 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Lugrin is one of the medium-sized communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Especially during the 1980s, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there was strong growth in the number of residents. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old village center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lugrin was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Évian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains.

The village is slightly above the main road N5 , which leads from Thonon-les-Bains along the lake shore to Saint-Gingolph . Other road connections exist with Maxilly-sur-Léman and Thollon.

The place had a train station on the Tonkin line , a reopening is planned for 2015.
