Ballaison is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Ballaison is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Gutedel grape variety (known locally as Chasselas ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Crépy .

Ballaison is located at 592  m , 17 kilometers northeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The municipality extends in a panoramic location on the western slope of Mont de Boisy, above the Bas-Chablais plain south of Lake Geneva .

The area of ​​the 13.30 km² large municipal area includes a section of Bas-Chablais. The area takes up the main part of the wide, wooded ridge of the Mont de Boisy in the summit area and reaches the highest point of Loisin with 734  m . The slope is drained by various small streams to Lake Geneva. The southern border lies in the valley of the Grand Vire , a left tributary of the Foron, which flows into Lake Geneva at Sciez.

Ball season includes the hamlets of Marcorens ( 591  m ) on the upper western slope of Mont de Boisy and Le Veigeret ( 660  m ), Boisy ( 695  m ) and Les Crapons ( 598  m ) on its southern slope. Ballaison's neighboring communities are Massongy and Sciez in the north, Bons-en-Chablais in the south, and Loisin and Douvaine in the west.

Attractions

The Château de Thenières dates from the 19th century. On a field near Ballaison there is an erratic block that was transported here from the Ice Age Rhone Glacier . It is 7.5 m high, 9 m long and around 6 m wide.

With 1,470 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Ballaison is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades there has been a continuous strong growth in the number of inhabitants. Outside of the old village center and on the promising hillside locations on Mont de Boisy, larger single-family houses were built.

Economy and Infrastructure

Ball season was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Viticulture is practiced on the western slope of Mont de Boisy . Today there are various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns or in the agglomeration of Geneva.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from Douvaine. Other road connections exist with Massongy and Bons-en-Chablais.
